Akira Uchida is a dancer, choreographer, creative director and teacher, originally from Ottawa, Canada. Now based in New York City, Akira has presented work at the Capezio Ace Awards, Fire Island Dance Festival, Battery Dance Festival, New Victory Dance and created work for the Joffrey Ballet School and the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. He has danced on television programs such as Canada’s Got Talent, Degrassi, The Strain, Over the Rainbow and Canada’s Smartest Person and worked with music artists such as HAAI, Leon Vynehall, Photay, Lights, Ria Mae and Tyler Shaw. Recently, he worked on Puma’s Futrograde Show as part of New York Fashion Week SS23. Akira is currently a faculty member as a contemporary teacher on JUMP Dance Convention, for which he travels across North America making his influence on the upcoming generation of dancers with his progressive teaching style.

"And On…" was presented at Fire Island Dance Festival 2022 to benefit Dancers Responding to AIDS .
Through a synthesis of contemporary and jazz dance with club grooves, this work explores the idea of life as a continuity rather than as a series of separate moments in time. This piece is an invitation to recognize the beauty in this perpetual unfolding and to celebrate each passing moment, small or large, as each one becomes the next.

I'm so happy to see fire island dance festival again. Akira, your choreo is impressive. I was reminded of my childhood, a time when dancing was pure joy. I love your look at the body language, which makes the artists appear so light, happy and proud and clearly distinguishes itself from heteronormative body language.
